professional development

Goal: Develop a sustainable network of competent, confident, creative arts instructors by providing regional professional development opportunities for artists, preservice teachers, classroom teachers, school administrators, arts administrators, and volunteers.

The Creative Education Program staff has convened a professional development advisory committee to identify opportunities, challenges, and potential partnerships to support collaborative, countywide professional development in arts education. A regional task force of representatives from schools, universities, and arts provider organizations was assembled to identify existing programs and fill gaps in professional development in arts education. This Professional Development Forum has led to new partnerships among organizations and a deeper understanding of the professional development landscape.

Arts in the Classroom Professional Development Program
Cultural Initiatives Silicon Valley is excited to partner with the Santa Clara County Office of Education and the Bay Area California Arts Project to offer the Arts in the Classroom Professional Development Program. The program aims to augment reflective practice in interdisciplinary arts instruction among teachers in Santa Clara County.

The Arts in the Classroom Professional Development Program is part of the Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination (AEMDD) Grants Program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Innovation. As part of the AEMDD goals, this program will engage participants in high quality professional development, in generating interdisciplinary instructional units, and contributing to the evaluation of the impact and implementation of the program. Through the dissemination of the resulting research, the program intends to improve arts instruction, interdisciplinary arts learning, and student achievement in the great county area. Results of the professional development series and the evaluation will be shared with a national audience in contribution toward the field of arts education, and education in general.

Arts Intensive Series 2005-2006:
Summer Arts Intensives: July 25-29 and August 1-5, 2005
+ 3 School-Year Follow Up Sessions: Fall 2005, Winter 2006, Spring 2006

The Arts Intensive Series is a dynamic professional development opportunity that provides hands-on arts experiences in all four disciplines, in addition to skills development in standards-based lesson design, interdisciplinary instruction (arts integration) techniques, and arts assessment.

The Arts in Your Classroom: Visual and Performing Arts Resource Guide for K-8 Educators
The Creative Education Program also supports the County Office of Education in the development and implementation of its Visual and Performing Arts Resource Guide. The resource guide provides standards-based lessons in all disciplines for K-8 classrooms, and teaching strategies for arts integration, with contributions from regional master teachers. The Creative Education Program has partnered with the County Office of Education and Montalvo Arts Center to offer the annual "Arts in Your Classroom" conference, held at Montalvo in March 2003, 2004, and 2005.
